Number Line Books & Giveaway Reminder

Happy Monday! We made it! Mondays always feel like a mountain to climb when the alarm goes off, and there's a sense of accomplishment when it's all over.  We had a great start to the week & kicked it off with some serious work!

We only have 10 instructional days until our firsties take their BIG test, so we spent our day focusing on the areas we need to work on the most.

First up....number lines!!!

I don't know about you, but problem solving with a number line is something my kiddos often struggle with.
They do very well with word problems....and they can add with a number line, but put the two together & it's complete chaos!

On our last math assessments, most of the first graders had a hard time matching problems with representations on a number line, so that's where we started today!

We started with some examples on the Promethean Board...
I did a couple problems & then the kids came up, one by one,and tried a few.
Don't look at the awful handwriting and scratchy notes! haha

We use the CUBES strategy ...
   C- Circle the #'s
U - Underline the problem (whoops! didn't do that on here!)
B - Box the key words that tell you whether to add or subtract
   E - Evaluate and THINK!
   S - Solve

After all the practice, I gave the kids their own book of problems to solve. I had them put a dot where they started, count their "skips" and circle where they "landed".

The kids solved the problems & then cut apart to make into a book. Then, they read their problems with a friend (while I stapled books, of course!)
I ran the front & back covers on the construction paper, so they could make it into a book.

It went so well !! I was SUPER impressed with their math skills today!! I pulled small groups of those that needed some extra help and those that needed a little "push" when using their strategies, but all in all, success! :)

If you would like to use this in your room, I've attached the FREEBIE just for you! :)
